Leah Evert-Burks


Ms. Evert-Burks is a highly talented and distinguished executive leader with 30 years of comprehensive legal and business expertise in a variety of corporations and industries.  She started her career with the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington D.C. in environmental enforcement  Ms. Evert-Burks served as the Director of Brand Protection for Deckers Brands, a billion-dollar/publicly held niche footwear company until 2015. Decker’s portfolio of brands include UGG®, Teva®, Sanuk®, Ahnu® and HOKA ONE ONE® with products are sold in more than 50 countries.  In that role, Ms. Evert-Burks led worldwide program to protect Deckers’ intellectual property including anti-counterfeit, trademark and patent prosecution and enforcement strategies.  


Since leaving Deckers, Ms. Evert-Burks established a brand protection consultancy (LEB Consulting, LLC) to bring in-house brand experience to companies without programs or in the early stages of developing brand protection programs.  Ms. Evert-Burks assists brands in the consideration of risks, strategies, priorities and the broad scope of business concerns that have brand protection implications; then helps put effective plans into action.  This includes providing guidance on pacing, budget and communication of programs, internally and externally.

Since 2015 Ms. Evert-Burks has served as an Industry Fellow for Michigan State University Center for Anti-Counterfeit and Product Protection and in 2016 was appointed Managing Editor for The Brand Protection Professional, an industry journal dedicated to the practice of brand protection;  previously Ms. Evert-Burks served as Advisory Board Member for A-CAPP; Ms Evert-Burks was the 2014 Co-Chair for the American Apparel and Footwear Association’s Brand Protection Council; she served as the Co-Chair of the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition conference in fall of 2012; from 2011-2012 Ms. Evert-Burks was the Outdoor Industry Association Co-Chair of Brand Protection / Anti-Counterfeit Committee. Ms. Evert-Burks has been a guest lecturer in Criminal Justice and Paralegal course studies for the University of California.  Ms. Evert-Burks served on an FBI-led Working Group relating to IP cyber-crimes and helped develop of a set of PSAs on IP-Cybercrimes which were awarded an Emmy® Award for best PSA in 2014; Ms. Evert-Burks has been interviewed on the subject of counterfeiting on Good Morning America and by numerous media franchises including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, ABA Journal Magazine among other publications and is a frequent speaker on the issue.
